Challenger panels
Overheating at the breaker-to-bus connection, with poor parts availability.

What actually goes wrong
Overheating where the breaker meets the bus, and a documented history of breakers failing to trip. Challenger acquired some of the tooling and design lineage behind earlier problem equipment, which is why the failure pattern looks familiar.
Is there a recall?
A recall was issued covering certain Challenger-branded circuit breakers, not the panels as a class. If you have a Challenger panel, the question of whether your specific breakers are within a recalled range is one for an electrician with the catalogue numbers in front of them.
How to tell if this is what you have
- The panel reads "Challenger".
- Common in homes built in the 1980s.
- Some panels carry both Challenger and earlier brand markings, because of the tooling lineage.
All of that is readable from the panel door or the label inside it. Do not remove the cover. The service conductors behind it stay live with the main breaker off, and an electrician can confirm the brand in minutes.
What usually forces the decision
Inspection findings during a sale, and parts availability. As with Zinsco, a repair that cannot be sourced becomes a replacement.
What replacement costs
Generally $1,500 to $4,500, on the same drivers as any service change.
There is no federal tax credit to offset this. The 25C credit covered up to $600 of a panelboard, but only alongside other qualifying work rather than for a standalone replacement, and it expired for property placed in service after 31 December 2025. State and utility programmes may still help, particularly for income-qualified households, and those vary by where you live.
